Surgical Referrals

Tom Webster is an RCVS recognised Advanced Practitioner in Small animal Surgery with a wealth of experience in complex orthopaedic, spinal and soft tissue surgery. We aim to maintain very high surgical standards, with the anaesthetic and surgery being carried out by an experienced team with high quality and up to date equipment all at a sensible cost. A surgical referral is not just the surgical procedure: we will also be here during the important post op period, for advice and post op checks (which are included with the surgery). Of course, no surgery is without risk of complications, and this can be a stressful event for all involved. However, we will be here to support you and your pet, and will work hard to get any problems resolved.

In all cases, Tom will be delighted to discuss the details, options and risks. Here are a few examples of what we offer:

Cruciate Surgery

Tom has performed huge numbers of cruciate surgeries and used a variety of techniques. We generally recommend TPLO (Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy) for most dogs, however in some situations the simpler ‘lateral suture’ may be appropriate. Tom would be delighted to discuss the details of these surgeries with you.

Luxating Patella

This is a common problem, especially in small breed dogs. To improve stability of the patella (knee cap), the groove is deepened, its point of attachment is moved and the soft tissues are tightened up and/or released as appropriate.

Fractures

We can repair most fractures here with our extensive range of orthopaedic equipment and implants.

Joint Problems

Joint pain resulting from injury or degenerative change is common. We are experienced at medicating joints eg with steroids, platelet rich plasma (PRP), and even stem cells. More invasive surgical procedures are also available such as arthrotomy (looking inside a joint) and, as a final resort, arthrodesis (joint fusion).

Spinal Surgery

Typically, spinal problems result from trauma or intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). We can perform various spinal surgeries to decompress the spinal cord and/or stabilise the spine. These cases will generally require advanced imaging (CT and MRI) and a precise diagnosis before surgery can be considered.

Large Mass Removals

Large tumours are common, and surgery may be a sensible option. Every case is different, and we would be happy to make an assessment and discuss options.

Abdominal Surgery

Complex abdominal surgery is available here, including for bladder, intestinal, ureteral, biliary, liver and kidney problems.

Thoracic Surgery

On occasions it is necessary to enter the chest, such as for the removal of lung tumours, oesophageal disease and repair of diaphragmatic ruptures. This can be performed by Tom and our team despite being an advanced procedure and not available in most vet practices.
